....nope now we just outsource it. The news of Mullah Barader's capture is good news all around don't get me wrong. I found an interesting piece of the Guardian's article though, that if the Left really did give a crap about this stuff (and not just use it as a rhetorical billy club against Bush/Cheney) should be up in arms about, yes? Here is the section:
"Mullah Barader has been in Pakistani custody for several days, with US and Pakistani intelligence officials both taking part in interrogations, according to the officials. Though Barack Obama has banned US agencies from using forms of torture such as waterboarding, Pakistani questioning techniques are frequently brutal."
The practice of rendition was made famous by none other than Billy Boy Clinton himself. The classic head in the sand situation i guess for Libs....if it isn't happening in front of me i just don't see it. This is all very fitting because in classic Washington style on Friday evening the DOJ released some documents after all the news people had gone to bed for the weekend. The "bad news" for Libs is that they have in effect exonerated John Yoo (by the way that link is a Jon Stewart epic fail) and Jay Bybee. Who are they, you ask. They are the evil ones who crafted the derisively named "torture memos". The whole exercise to prosecute them was/is counterproductive to our men and women in the intelligence field who are on the front lines in the war. In fact they are the most important aspect of this unconventional war we find ourselves in with Islamofascists.
So my question is this: Should we have American officers interrogate these men under our fairly strict guidelines (let's also not lose sight of the fact that ONLY 3 terrorists were waterboarded and the amounts of intelligence gathered was highly valuable) or allow Pakistanis who are not under any obligation to treat them better than we would? For me the answer is simple, I do not care who extracts the information. For those who disagree how do you reconcile allowing Pakistanis to torture in the presence of American supervision on foreign soil WITH your opposition to our much deliberated and legally debated EIT's that were borne out of the Yoo/Bybee memos?
To steal this from fellow blogger Moe Lane:
PS: What’s that? You’re from the Left, and you gave money to Democrats because you thought that they would prosecute Yoo and Bybee for doing their jobs? And now you want that money back? Why, how profoundly silly of you. Next, you’ll be telling farmers to give milk back to the cows.
