The Genie Is Out..

The recent unmasking of Dave Weigel and the Journolist has, I believe, mortally wounded the mainstream media. The Internet, Breitbart, talk radio, and numerous right of center bloggers were all flesh wounds compared to the treasure trove of bias and yes even conspiracy found in the listserv known as the Journolist. If you are unfamiliar with Journolist, it was a listserv (since been taken down after the Dave Weigel firing at WaPo) started by Ezra Klein comprised of several hundred liberal reporters as well as like minded professors and activists. The sole purpose was to organize the liberal message and coordinate what was newsworthy. These weren't just bloggers and Mother Jones types, these were what we thought were legitimate journalists. This morning Tucker Carlson's website Daily Caller had this....
According to records obtained by The Daily Caller, at several points during the 2008 presidential campaign a group of liberal journalists took radical steps to protect their favored candidate. Employees of news organizations including Time, Politico, the Huffington Post, the Baltimore Sun, the Guardian, Salon and the New Republic participated in outpourings of anger over how Obama had been treated in the media, and in some cases plotted to fix the damage.

In one instance, Spencer Ackerman of the Washington Independent urged his colleagues to deflect attention from Obama’s relationship with Wright by changing the subject. Pick one of Obama’s conservative critics, Ackerman wrote, “Fred Barnes, Karl Rove, who cares — and call them racists.”

Michael Tomasky, a writer for the Guardian, also tried to rally his fellow members of Journolist: “Listen folks–in my opinion, we all have to do what we can to kill ABC and this idiocy in whatever venues we have. This isn’t about defending Obama. This is about how the [mainstream media] kills any chance of discourse that actually serves the people.”

“Richard Kim got this right above: ‘a horrible glimpse of general election press strategy.’ He’s dead on,” Tomasky continued. “We need to throw chairs now, try as hard as we can to get the call next time. Otherwise the questions in October will be exactly like this. This is just a disease.”

Why is all of this important two years after the fact, well it illustrates the obvious bias of the media but most offensive, if you are to consider yourself a journalist, is the coordination of attacks and distribution of talking points. They are no longer journalists serving the public at that point they become a partisan hack. I guess that is why we have seen so many "legitimate" journo's go and join this administration. For most of us this is not surprising, the bias anyways, what is surprising is the extent, reach and coordination of the hackery. In some instances using the same exact terms, and sentences in their stories that they first would discuss on the listserv. For a lot of Americans the mainstream media is their sole source of news. Bias was one thing to write off, but this outright advocating on behalf of a candidate escaping the bottle is one the MSM will have a difficult time getting back in. They have killed their own integrity and journalistic principles in exchange for feeling good that they got their guy elected. Disgusting really. These hacks single handedly tore down Hillary's primary campaign while building up Obama's, then continued this pattern in demonizing Palin in the general election. Not only is the ideological bent obvious but so is the sexism. As Andrew Breitbart described today "...American journalism died a long time ago, today Tucker Carlson got around to writing the obituary"

This leads me to comment on the story Breitbart actually broke yesterday with video. To me it isn't all that surprising that someone like this would have a job in this administration. Just happy that the USDA did have her resign. This woman is just a microcosm of the line of thought that courses through the veins of the Obama administration. The story here, here and here. To their credit, the NAACP has issued a statement in rebuke of this woman speaking at one of their events. Read it here.
